The Wild Reeds Joke About Who Is The Wildest
At 2017's Newport Folk Festival the Recording Academy's New York Chapter spoke with indie folk artists The Wild Reeds. From left to right, as seated, they are Kinsey Lee, Nick Phakpiseth, Sharon Silva, Mackenzie Howe, and Nicholas Jones. Howe, Lee and Silva started the band in 2010, emphasizing their natural harmonies, and later added Jones on drums and Phakpiseth on bass. Their 2017 album The World We Built is their label debut so they've been playing its 11 songs heavily. "Having three songwriters in the band, we have so much material that we ourselves are eager to play new stuff," said Lee. "We just finished three or four songs on our break." Asked who was the wildest, it turned out this has been a running comparison of sorts. "I think all our close, individual friends are like, 'Well, you're really the wildest reed,'" said Silva. "It's so funny, Kinsey has a card from one of our best friends and it says, 'the wildest reed.'" Kinsey Lee denied the honor, however, saying, "Definitely not me."
