Strumbellas Smash Came From Struggling U.S. Tour
Canadian indie rockers the Strumbellas released their single "Spirits" from their album Hope early in 2016 and at that year's Lollapalooza, described their hit's success to the Chicago Chapter. They described the song as a "monster," composited from five of their songs, and it became a monster hit with 50 million views two years later on YouTube, peaking shortly before the interview's Lollapalooza at No. 7 on Billboard Hot Rock Songs. The song was later placed on the "Intervention" episode of CBC TV series "This Life," airing that Nov. 2016. The songs of Hope were composed while struggling through an arduous U.S. tour with poor attendance, but on the fun side the van trips were generally spent listening to Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. Something in that pop feeling carried them through to the other side of their U.S. tour's struggles with Hope and "Spirits."
