Nikki Lane Got Aggressive And It's Been Non-Stop Ever Since
New York Chapter caught up with Nikki Lane at the Newport Folk Festival in 2017 and discussed the Highway Queen album she released that Feb. In the three years since her All Or Nothin' album, produced by Dan Auerbach, she became aggressive about playing out, even though it "wears me out … It's hard to juggle having a sane home life with being out here all the time." Those feelings were expressed in the title track "Highway Queen" because that's what she felt she had become, but in March 2017 it was No. 2 on Billboard Heatseekers Albums. Although she feels "some of the best sets are little bitty holes in the wall in the middle of nowhere," she felt proud comparing this year's Stagecoach to her performance two years earlier. "We're able to play big festivals to large groups of people, they have their choice where they're going to spend that hour set, and they come to you," Lane described. "It kind of validates that all the hard work is paying off."
