A Nameless Ghoul: Ghost's Goal For Sound Was Proto-Metal
One of the five Nameless Ghouls in the metal band Ghost from Sweden sat down with Chicago Chapter at Lollapalooza 2016. At the 58th GRAMMY Awards the band won Best Metal Performance for their song "Cirice," and our Ghoul describes how the song was originally the second of two parts. The first part got whittled off as it became clear "Cirice" would be their 2015 album Meliora's lead single. The self-titled album that changed everything by Black Sabbath was released in 1970, and it is those early years before the metal genre really defined itself that the band seeks to sonically inhabit and realize. A Nameless Ghoul called it "Proto-Metal."
