2021 Latin GRAMMYs: Juanes Invites Café Tacvba To The Stage, Covers Juan Gabriel's "No Tengo Dinero"
Taking a snip from the Juanes: Origen documentary on Amazon Prime, Juanes arrives on the Latin GRAMMYs stage evoking a scene from the doc, joined by Café Tacvba's Ruben Álbarran and Meme.
Telecasting in black and white like a vintage TV program, the duo opens up in good ol' traditional rock band fashion, performing the heck out of "No Tengo Dinero," in all-matching navy-blue suits à la the Beatles. Meme strums his jarana while Juanes rocks out on a Fender Stratocaster — yes, the kind that Jimi Hendrix would burn at festivals.
Juanes' rendition of "No Tengo Dinero" is an indisputable banger, originally a cherished classic by the late, great Juan Gabriel. The Mexican icon — lovingly nicknamed El Divo de Juárez — initially penned the song in 1971 for his debut album El Alma Joven. And it was only the start of a bevy of masterpieces he would compose during his insanely prolific 45-year career.
On Juanes' tribute album to the legends — the multi-GRAMMY-nominated album Origen — Juanes embarks on a mission to deep dive into his roots, and explore the various phases of his formative musical-making.
The Colombian mastermind is historically one of the most nominated artists by the Latin Recording Academy, boasting a staggering 25 Latin GRAMMYs and two GRAMMYs to date.
Tacvba, the beloved Mexico City four-piece, is currently embarking on a North American tour, which kicked off in New York with two sold-out shows. "We [strive] to break the rules that we self-impose and show that we can renovate," Albarrán told Rolling Stone in 2017. "That gives us energy, it nourishes us. If we continue doing the same thing, then we'll get bored and wear out."
