South By Southwest 2018 is officially in the books. As always, the weeklong intersection of film, food, music, culture, and industry networking saw thousands of people descend upon Austin, Texas, to attend hundreds of pop-up events, screenings, panel discussions, tastings, and all forms of great live music.

Austin's 6th Street Comes Alive At SXSW

SXSW long ago cemented its reputation as the annual coming-out party for music's rising stars, and often sets the stage for which acts the greater music industry will spotlight and start paying attention to over the coming summer.

This year, we asked our friends at Shazam to help us crunch the numbers to find out which performers' showcase sets made the biggest impact. Thanks to their help, we were able to isolate which artists were trending in Austin during the run of the festival, and we've identified seven female artists and women-fronted bands who performed at this year's SXSW and held their own alongside industry heavyweights like Kendrick Lamar & SZA, Imagine Dragons, Janelle Monae, and N.E.R.D. as the most-Shazam'd music of the week.

Tameca Jones

Tameca Jones, 2018

A local native who's been called the "Queen of Austin Soul," Tameca Jones has some impressive collaborations under her belt. She sung a duet with Gary Clark Jr. on his album The Story Of Sonny Boy Slim early in her career as a solo artist, and later on was joined on stage by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt, Patty Griffin, and more to help pay tribute to the late musician Ian McLagan at the 2015 Austin Music Awards. This year, Jones performed a daytime set at the Palm Door on Sixth Patio on St. Patrick's Day, and her latest single "Good Boy" clearly made an impression.

Saweetie

Saweetie, 2018

Instagram model-turned-rapper Saweetie has officially parlayed social media success into a full-time career as a performer.  Her viral hit "ICY GIRL," which samples Khia's 2002 sleeper hit "My Neck, My Back," racked up nearly five million plays on Soundcloud in the final three months of 2017 and caught the attention of Warner Bros., who just inked a deal with Saweetie this January. She performed at the Pandora Showcase at the Gatsby on Mar. 14 and HipHopDX on Mar. 16, with the second show serving as a release party for her debut album High Maintenance, which dropped the same day.

Erika Wennerstrom

Erika Wennerstrom, 2018

Taking a (temporary) break from her duties as the leading lady of garage rock outfit Heartless Bastards – with whom she's already released five well-reviewed albums since they landed their first record deal in 2004 with the help the Black Keys' drummer Patrick Carney – Wennerstrom is now gearing up to release her solo debut Sweet Unknown on Mar. 23.  She played the Paradigm Nashville showcase at Palm Door on Sixth on Mar. 14, and her two new singles "Extraordinary Love" and "Twisted Highway" both made their way up the Shazam rankings as fans took to their phones to learn more about the authentic bar-room rock songstress' new solo project.

The Shacks

Shannon Wise of The Shacks, 2018

Twenty-year-old bassist/singer and frontwoman Shannon Wise's airy, ethereal vocals help spin the Shacks' melodic grooves into a meditation on youth and longing that makes for the perfect soundtrack to a sunny summer day.  The New York-based trio (who boast a combined age just barely north of 60 years – do the math on that one) played a late-night Mar. 15 gig at Empire Control Room and then took the sundown set the next day at the Radio Day Stage in the Austin Convention Center. With their track "Follow Me" trending sharply upward following their performances, and their mesmerizing cover of Ray Davies' "This Strange Effect" getting picked up for a new iPhone commercial that also stars Wise herself, these kids are definitely a group to watch.

Superorganism

Orono Noguchi of Superorganism, 2018

An eight-member psychedelic pop group with members hailing from all over the globe, Superorganism's origin story is a charmingly modern tale of intercontinental collaboration facilitated largely by internet memes and Skype calls. With a sound that's simultaneously fresh yet reminiscent of the type of whimsical bedroom-produced experimentalism that set the high-water mark of the golden age of early aughts blogwave (see: Moldy Peaches, early Animal Collective, Myspace bands, et al.), Superorganism played primetime gigs during NPR's showcase at Stubb's BBQ on Mar. 14 and British Music Embassy @ Latitude 30 on Mar. 17, also appearing at the BBC Radio 1 Event at Clive Bar on Mar. 16.  Their self-titled debut LP was just released on Mar. 2, and their breathy pop culture self-examination "Everybody Wants To Be Famous" was the big takeaway from SXSW 2018.

CLARA-NOVA

CLARA-NOVA, 2016

French-American indie pop multi-instrumentalist Sydney Wayser has been releasing albums as CLARA-NOVA since 2008's Silent Parade, along the way landing occasional placements in film and television programs such as Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods And Kings, "Shameless" and "Grey's Anatomy." After relocating from New York to L.A. in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Wayser revamped her sound and brought on a full backing band, but suffered setbacks due to disputes over masters ownership with her label.  2017 saw her on the road with Lorde as a backup singer while also working with GRAMMY-winning producer Shawn Everett, known for his work with Weezer, Alabama Shakes and others, on her new EP The Iron Age, which dropped on Mar. 2. She debuted her latest tracks at Palm Door on Sabine on Mar. 15, and new single "Echo" was clearly a crowd-pleaser.

Jade Bird

Jade Bird, 2018

A British singer/songwriter destined to hop across the pond to link up with Simone Felice of the Felice Brothers to record an album of Americana songs, Jade Bird assembled her 2017 debut EP Something American in a studio in the Catskills with the help of GRAMMY-winning drummer Matt Johnson and multi-GRAMMY winning Bob Dylan and Tom Petty contemporary Larry Campbell. Bird played four memorable primetime sets across the week – Elysium on Mar. 13, British Music Embassy @ Latitude 30 on Mar. 14, the Singer/Songwriter Showcase at Mohawk Outdoor on Mar. 15, and a St. Patrick's Day set at Cheer Up Charlies on Mar. 17. Her new single "Lottery," released just last month, understandably caught the attention of the assembled listeners. Bird was also honored with the prestigious Grulke Prize For Developing Non-U.S. Act, which recognizes artists breaking new ground and showing the most promise.

After its 2020 edition was postponed to next year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Primavera Sound Barcelona has today (May 27) announced the first 100 artists confirmed for its 2021 installment. The initial lineup features "a majority of artists who reconfirm their presence at the festival," according to a blog post shared on the event's official website announcing the 2021 artist roster, including Bad Bunny, Tyler, The Creator, The Strokes, Pavement, Bikini Kill and several other previously announced artists. Newly added artists include Charli XCX, Tame Impala, Gorillaz, FKA twigs, Jamie xx and Jorja Smith, among many others.

The five-day festival, now taking place June 2-6, 2021, in Barcelona, Spain, was originally scheduled to celebrate its 20-year anniversary next month (June 3-7). In late March, the festival was postponed to August due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this month (May 11), Primavera Sound Barcelona 2020 was ultimately postponed to next year, with the festival citing force majeure. The festival will now celebrate its 20th anniversary during the newly rescheduled dates in June 2021.

More artists, including acts confirmed for the original 2020 lineup and new additions, will be announced over the next few months, according to the Primavera Sound Barcelona website.

A post shared by Primavera Sound (@primavera_sound)

In the blog post, festival organizers addressed the impact the coronavirus pandemic has made on Primavera Sound Barcelona and the "hard times" it has caused for everyone involved.

"The entire Primavera Sound Barcelona team would like to acknowledge that we really appreciate all the messages of support, for the understanding and encouragement that we have received over the past few weeks," the post reads. "These are hard times for everyone and to feel that so many people are looking forward to collective events like our festival pushes us to work with more passion than ever …

"Whoever said that the second chances are never good did not imagine that we would experience something like what is happening this 2020. With the whole world on pause due to the evolution of the global pandemic and with the live music sector holding its breath facing a summer without festivals, we can only look forward: towards 2021, specifically, the year in which we are going to recover everything that will be pending from 2020."

The 2021 installment of Primavera Sound Barcelona will debut Brunch -On The Beach, a brand-new closing party on the beach. The inaugural event, which was originally announced for the 2020 iteration of the festival this past February, will now take place Sunday, June 6, 2021, and will feature DJ sets from Disclosure, Nina Kraviz, Amelie Lens and Black Coffee.

Tickets for Primavera Sound Barcelona 2021 will go on sale June 3 at 6 a.m. EST/noon CEST. All tickets purchased for the 2020 festival are valid for the 2021 edition. That same day, the festival will begin to offer exchanges and refunds for those who purchased tickets for the 2020 festival.

U.K. music festival Wireless Festival has announced Wireless Connect, a brand-new live virtual reality festival. While no acts have been announced yet, the three-day event, taking place July 3-5, will feature pre-recorded performances from "some of the biggest UK and US artists," according to a social media post announcing the online experience.

Viewers can tune into Wireless Connect for free by downloading the MelodyVR app or via Wireless Festival's Facebook page, NME reports.

The inaugural Wireless Connect follows the cancelation of this year's Wireless Festival, which was officially called off earlier this month due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Billed as a 360-degree virtual reality festival, Wireless Connect is a collaboration with MelodyVR, a virtual reality platform specializing in the music and live music space.

According to a blog post shared on the Wireless Festival website, Wireless Connect will feature "unseen performances" and "exclusive footage" from the as-of-yet unannounced artists featured on the lineup, which will be unveiled soon.

The online event will comprise live performances filmed in MelodyVR's studio space in Los Angeles as well as in the historic theatre of London's Alexandra Palace, according to Melvin Benn, the managing director of Festival Republic, the company behind Wireless Festival.

The 2020 installment of Wireless Festival was originally supposed to feature a hip-hop-heavy lineup, including headliners A$AP Rocky, Skepta and Meek Mill as well as Migos, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, City Girls, AJ Tracey, Tion Wayne, M Huncho and others.

Wireless Festival is one of many U.K. festivals and events canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which include Glastonbury, WOMAD, Isle of Wight, Parklife, All Points East, Lovebox and Download, among others.

Supersonic, the new multi-day, multi-city Japanese music festival, has unveiled its second artist lineup announcement for its first-ever edition this fall. The three-day event, taking place Sept. 19-21 in Tokyo and Osaka, has confirmed additional artists Black Eyed Peas, Steve Aoki, Clean Bandit and others. The festival has also added local Japanese artists including Asian Kung-Fu Generation, one of Japan's leading rock bands, Nulbarich, BiSH, chelmico and several others.

They join headliners and other confirmed acts like Post Malone, The 1975, Skrillex, Wu-Tang Clan, Liam Gallagher, Fatboy Slim and Kygo, who were previously announced in early April.

A post shared by SUMMER SONIC / SUPERSONIC 2020 (@summersonic_official)

The lineup news comes as the coronavirus pandemic has decimated the festival and live music industry since mid-March, essentially shutting down the global concert business. At the time of this writing, Japan has more than 17,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and 778 coronavirus-related deaths, according to The New York Times. In early April, the country declared a state of emergency and this week fell into a recession for the first time since 2015, The New York Times reports.

Read: Recording Academy And MusiCares Establish COVID-19 Relief Fund

In a blog post shared on the festival's website announcing the lineup additions, organizers addressed the "difficult circumstances" the COVID-19 pandemic has caused.

"Under these difficult circumstances, the entire Supersonic staff is working to welcome the audience in the best form possible this fall while exploring a new form for the festival from now on," the post reads. "We thank you for your understanding and cooperation."

Supersonic is produced by the team behind Summer Sonic, one of Japan's biggest music festivals that's held annually over the summer in Tokyo and Osaka. Festival organizers postponed this year's installment of Summer Sonic to 2021 due to the 2020 Summer Olympics and Summer Paralympics, which were originally scheduled to take place in Tokyo this summer before the global sporting event itself was also postponed to next year, and instead introduced Supersonic for this year only, Japan Web Magazine reports.

Last August, Summer Sonic celebrated its 20-year anniversary with a lineup that featured Red Hot Chili Peppers, BLACKPINK, The Chainsmokers, Weezer and more. Attracting 135,000 visitors over three days, Summer Sonic become Japan's biggest outdoor music festival last year, IQ reports.

Dreamville Festival 2020 Is Officially Canceled Due To COVID-19

The second annual music festival from J. Cole's Dreamville Records squad and friends was first postponed from April until August, and will now have to wait until 2021

Dreamville Festival has announced they are canceling their 2020 event due to public safety concerns caused by coronavirus. The second annual edition of the one-day music fest, hosted by J. Cole and his talent-filled Dreamville Records, was originally slated to take place on April 6 at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, N.C., but was rescheduled to Aug. 29 after the pandemic struck the U.S.

Like countless other events that were set to take place this year, it will now have to wait until 2021. Dreamville says all 2020 ticket holders will be receive refunds soon.

We sadly have to cancel our second year of Dreamville Music Fest. Please refer to the @dreamvillefest website for further instructions. We will return strong. In the meantime, stay safe. One Love ❤️ pic.twitter.com/typwr2jU27

— Dreamville (@Dreamville) May 16, 2020

"After much deliberation and careful monitoring of the current situation, we have decided to cancel Dreamville Festival 2020. Although we originally hoped it would be possible to bring you the festival this August, the ongoing uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 pandemic has made this timeline no longer possible. This decision has been extremely difficult to make, but the safety of our fans, artists, and staff is always our top priority, and nothing will ever take precedence over your well-being," the organizers wrote in a statement shared across their social channels and on the fest's website.

The message also shared details on refunds, noting that all tickets purchased online will automatically be refunded to the original payment method, beginning this week. Fans who bought physical tickets from official points of purchase can request a refund here.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this. Please stay safe, healthy, and sane so we can reunite with you in 2021," the statement added.

According to Pitchfork, the debut Dreamville fest also faced unforeseen setbacks; it was originally set for Sept. 15, 2018 at Dorothea Dix Park but was pushed to April 6, 2019, due to Hurricane Florence. The 2019 event featured performances from Dreamville head Cole and labelmates J.I.D, BAS and Ari Lennox, as well as SZA, Big Sean, 21 Savage, 6LACK, Rapsody, Nelly and other heavy-hitters in hip-hop and R&B.

No artists have been revealed yet for the second edition of the fest.

The Dreamville squad earned their first two collective GRAMMY nominations at the most recent 62nd GRAMMY Awards; for Best Rap Album for the collaborative Revenge Of The Dreamers III and Best Rap Performance for one of its singles, "Down Bad." Cole earned a total of five nods, including for his work on that project, and took him his first GRAMMY win for his feature on 21 Savage's "A Lot."
