The nominees in the R&B Field for the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards represent the past, present and future of soul music.

One exciting story from this year's nominations is the first-time nods garnered by R&B artists in the General Field. Frank Ocean walked away with nominations for Record Of The Year for "Thinkin Bout You," Album Of The Year for Channel Orange and Best New Artist. In the Song Of The Year category, Miguel grabbed a nomination for his catchy commercial smash "Adorn."

These two young artists didn't stop there, however, also making a bold showing in the R&B Field. Miguel collected three more nominations for Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song and Best Urban Contemporary Album. The latter category finds Miguel competing against Frank Ocean and GRAMMY winner Chris Brown. That's a hard three-man race to call but the competition is healthy in other categories as well.

GRAMMY winner Usher is also up for Best R&B Performance for his hit song "Climax," on which he experimented with new sounds, a gamble that paid off handsomely. Also up for the award are first-time honoree Luke James for his soulful debut song "I Want You," GRAMMY winner Estelle ("Thank You") and previous GRAMMY nominees the Robert Glasper Experiment featuring Ledisi ("Gonna Be Alright [F.T.B.])."

The Robert Glasper Experiment also snagged a Best R&B Album nod for Black Radio. Collecting his 25th nomination is GRAMMY winner R. Kelly for Write Me Back. Fellow repeat nominee Tyrese received his third GRAMMY nomination for the album Open Invitation. Rounding out the nominees for Best R&B Album are Tamia for Beautiful Surprise and Anthony Hamilton for Back To Love.

Tamia and Hamilton also have songs going head-to-head in the Best R&B Song category. Other R&B song nominations go to songs performed by Miguel, Trey Songz and Elle Varner. (The GRAMMY in this category goes to the songwriter.)

The Best Traditional R&B Performance category includes GRAMMY winners Anita Baker and Melanie Fiona. (Fiona who took this award home last year for "Fool For You," her collaboration with Cee Lo Green.) GRAMMY nominees SWV, who celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release of their debut album this year, garnered a nomination for "If Only You Knew"; jazz-tinged singer Gregory Porter appeared for "Real Good Hands"; and multiple GRAMMY winner Beyoncé joined her fellow nominees with her bubbly anthem "Love On Top."

The nominated R&B artists are an impressive cross section of the best in soul music in all its varieties. See who gets the ultimate prize on the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 10.

R&B Shines On In 2012

THE GRAMMYs

Dec 2, 2014 - 3:22 pm

To borrow from R&B/pop princess Rihanna, the R&B genre made sure to "shine bright like a diamond" in 2012, making this year one of the strongest in recent memory.

The year began on a somber note for R&B fans with losses of two iconic figures: Don Cornelius and Whitney Houston. Cornelius, the creator and host of the long-running series "Soul Train," and Houston, one of the biggest pop stars of all time, both passed away in February but their respective legacies live on.

On a more positive note, we celebrated the return of D'Angelo, who came back to the stage for the first time in almost a decade for a European tour in January before joining Mary J. Blige on the road later in the year. D'Angelo debuted a handful of new songs for live audiences that set blogs and social media on fire when fan videos inevitably made their way online.

One of the biggest releases of the first quarter came from the Robert Glasper Experiment. Black Radio blurred the lines between R&B, soul, hip-hop, and jazz and featured collaborations with Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Stokley Williams of Mint Condition, and the first daughter of soul, Lalah Hathaway.

Mixtapes once again proved a savvy way for artists to get their music to the public and gain fans in the process. R&B ingénue Elle Varner set the stage for her debut album, Perfectly Imperfect, with the well-received mixtape Conversational Lush, introducing new fans to her breakout song "Refill." Miguel released his Art Dealer Chic mixtape in three parts, starting with the single "Adorn," which heightened anticipation for his sophomore album, Kaleidoscope Dream. After sparking interest in 2011 with his Nostalgia, Ultra mixtape, Frank Ocean made headlines with the release of his official first album, Channel Orange, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

GRAMMY winners Alicia Keys and R. Kelly, and Bobby Womack, Eric Benét, Mint Condition, and Angie Stone also dropped new singles and albums in 2012. Usher released Looking 4 Myself, which was led by the single "Climax" and became his fourth No. 1 album. Brandy delighted fans with the release of her long-awaited sixth studio album, Two Eleven, which highlighted her signature vocals on songs such as the flirtatiously fun "Put It Down" featuring Chris Brown and the fan-favorite "Wildest Dreams." GRAMMY winner Faith Evans starred in the reality series "R&B Divas" and released an album of the same name with her co-stars Nicci Gilbert, Syleena Johnson, Keke Wyatt, and Monifah Carter.

Both projects from Brandy and Evans were tributes to Whitney Houston. Two Eleven signified not only Brandy's birth date but the date on which Houston died earlier this year. The premise of "R&B Divas" was to chronicle the recording of the compilation album in Houston's honor.

Coupled with the recent TV special "We Will Always Love You: A GRAMMY Salute To Whitney Houston," these loving homages provided lasting tributes to one of music's brightest diamonds that ever did shine.

The nostalgia-inducing lineup also features Cam'ron, Tweet, Amerie, Mario, 112, Montell Jordan and Dru Hill. Newer R&B and hip-hop queens Jhené Aiko, Summer Walker and Megan Thee Stallion will also bring the sultry vibes.

Following the lineup announcement, a few of the artists included on the bill, including Lil Kim, Mase and Twista, denied any affiliation with the event, causing confusion about the festival's roster and legitimacy; Twista later redacted his statement on social media. Prayer hands that the rest of the artists will be making the incredibly epic lineup very real come May.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale this Thursday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m. PT. General on-sale tickets will be available starting Friday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. PT.

Visit the festival's official website to sign up for the pre-sale and for more info on the big event.
