On the latest episode of the GRAMMY Museum's "Required Listening" podcast, you're in for a treat. Host Scott Goldman sits down with GRAMMY winner Keith Urban for a 45-minute discussion and all topics were seemingly on the table, including his earliest musical influences, his formative years in cover bands, his approach to songwriting and record making, how MusiCares played a part in his sobriety, the art of collaboration, and his new album, 2018's Graffiti U.

Listen Now: "Required Listening" Episode With Keith Urban

Here are five things we picked up from the conversation — make sure to check out the entire episode.

Why his first concert is etched in his memory:

"[Johnny Cash] was my first concert. I think I was about 5," said Urban. "What I remember from that concert was just how loud the crowd was. It was a 5,000-seat venue, which when you're tiny might as well be a stadium. I remember just the roar of everybody when this guy walked out onstage. It's never left me. The power of when he played the guitar and sang was just extraordinary."

How playing in a cover band inspired him to write his own songs:

"I was in a cover band in 1988 and … I was playing guitar," said Urban. "We were trying to tell the lead singer, 'Let's slip in a few originals now. Let's turn the tide a bit.' And every night … we'd get to the original, the band would be so excited. The lead singer would say, 'Ah, skip that one. …' That was the start of me [thinking], 'Well, I need to get my own band going and write my own [songs].'"

On the importance of balance within the creative process:

"The great adage that 'balance is never achieved, it's just maintained' is so true in everything," said Urban. "Even in record making, the balance for me is in being very sure of where I want to go and what I want to do and who I am, but also being completely open to someone having an idea that's completely different than mine but actually is better."

Why he enjoys collaborating with others:

"I know what I do; I know what you do. But I don't know what we [can] do," said Urban. "I'm interested in that third thing. When I worked with Nile Rodgers, he was someone I aggressively sought out. I've always loved his playing and his record making. I said, 'I think if we can get in a room, we can do something really fun. … He did what he did and I [did] what I do. And we just played long enough for this third thing ['Sun Don't Let Me Down'] to emerge. That's what I love about collaborating."

How a country legend inspired the first track on Graffiti U:

"The first song on this album is called 'Coming Home' and I actually used a Merle Haggard sample to spark the song," said Urban. "I didn't have any idea what the song would be about but when I started hearing this rolling guitar intro of 'Mamma Tried,' it immediately made me think of growing up in Australia. It was all driven by the music speaking and pulling that out."

On a recent episode of the GRAMMY Museum's "Required Listening" podcast, Keith Urban revealed the inspiration behind "Coming Home," the first track on his new album, 2018's Graffiti U. Now, the GRAMMY winner has released a brand-new video for his upbeat collaboration with Julia Michaels.

"The first song on this album is called 'Coming Home' and I actually used a Merle Haggard sample to spark the song," Urban told "Required Listening" host Scott Goldman. "I didn't have any idea what the song would be about but when I started hearing this rolling guitar intro of 'Mamma Tried,' it immediately made me think of growing up in Australia."

— Keith Urban (@KeithUrban) May 25, 2018

As described by Rolling Stone, the video displays an American surrealist landscape where Urban, trapped in the city, travels through his mind to the musical escape of hearing and seeing "Coming Home" at a club where he both sits and performs the pump song with Michaels. The surrealism allows Midwestern pastures to mentally connect with the small club venue where his latest hit is itself the answer to urban alienation. It all makes for a great escape in its country-loving self, both as a song and in its refreshing mindscape of a music video.

Urban's Graffiti U, his 10th studio album, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The GRAMMY winner will kick off a world tour in support of the LP on June 15 in St. Louis.

If all you wanna do is have some fun, then you're in luck. On the new episode of the GRAMMY Museum's "Required Listening" podcast, you'll get your dose and then some in the form of a compelling discussion with Sheryl Crow.

Listen Now: "Required Listening" Episode With Sheryl Crow

In a 40-minute-plus conversation with host Scott Goldman, the "If It Makes You Happy" singer/songwriter will take you inside the creation of her 2017 album, Be Myself. Crow discusses her frame of mind going into the album's creative process, how the political and social climates influenced her songwriting and why, as a mother, "scheduling inspiration" is imperative.

"Truth be told, [Be Myself] really is where I'm at. I feel like, 'Hey, I'm my age and I love it. And I don't want to be anybody else,'" the former Best New Artist GRAMMY wwinner said about the LP. "It's about acceptance."

The GRAMMY winner also shares her thoughts on her two-decade-plus creative journey, the importance of music teachers and music education, and why she is a big believer in tech detoxes.

"I actually did go through a detox period. I keep my phone on me but it's always on silent. When I'm with my kids, I don't have my phone on me," revealed Crow. "I will never regret missing phone calls or texts or any of that to be present and to model that for my children. Because there will be a point in our evolution as people on this planet where it is going to cause some major problems."

Keith Urban's "Coming Home" Features Julia Michaels, Merle Haggard Riff Refresh

Keith Urban has released a moving and memorable lyric video for his anthem "Coming Home," featuring singer/songwriter Julia Michaels.

Rolling Stone explains how the riff in "Coming Home" is modified from Merle Haggard's famous lick in "Mama Tried," with Urban giving Haggard credit. While there's room for discussion of how pop production is blending new with old, and acoustic with electronic, Urban's modified version of the riff takes on a life of its own, sustaining the theme of the song and its upbeat expectations.

Those who enjoyed her GRAMMY nominated hit "Issues" or who've been fans of her songwriting for artists such as Fifth Harmony, Selena Gomez, or Demi Lovato know that Julia Michaels is a creative force to be reckoned with. Her strength in verse and harmony, coming in toward the end of Urban's latest, is warm and riveting at the same time.

Speaking to GRAMMY Museum Executive Director and "Required Listening" podcast host Scott Goldman at SXSW on March 16, Urban credited his affinity for collaborations as having made a big contribution to his artistic development. He also spoke about his upcoming album Graffiti U and summer tour. So in addition to the joys of "Coming Home," Urban's fans have a lot to look forward to.

What do you get when you pair an eclectic collection of contemporary pop hits with one of the most successful song interpreters of all time? And then add one of music's most decorated producers and an industry executive with a golden ear?

Listen Now: "Required Listening," Episode 6 With Johnny Mathis, Clive Davis And Babyface

You get Johnny Mathis' latest album, 2017's Sings The Great New American Songbook, which features covers of songs by Adele, Pharrell Williams, Leonard Cohen, Whitney Houston, and Keith Urban, and big assists from producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and esteemed record executive Clive Davis.

On the latest episode of "Required Listening," the new music podcast by HowStuffWorks and the GRAMMY Museum in partnership with the Recording Academy, host Scott Goldman uncovers the LP's complete story with Mathis, Babyface and Davis, including topics such as the song choices, production decisions and how the collaboration took shape.

"It was a joy to work that hard and to get the results." — Johnny Mathis

Sings The Great New American Songbook represents a fresh take on a covers album in linking the 82-year-old Mathis with a slew of modern-day pop smashes. Among the LP's cuts are Adele's "Hello," Williams' "Happy," Urban's "Blue Ain't Your Color," Cohen's "Hallelujah," and Houston's "Run To You." Getting a crack at putting his own spin on these contemporary songs was a unique challenge for Mathis, who received a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.

"You want me to sing that song?" joked Mathis, when asked his reaction to the songs Babyface and Davis put forth for him to interpret. "[There was a] revelation [with] these songs — they're new to me.'"

Mathis felt a positive synergy with the album's producer, 11-time GRAMMY winner Babyface, who has stewarded hits for artists from Houston, TLC and Boyz II Men to Mary J. Blige, Ariana Grande and Toni Braxton, in addition to his own impressive solo career.

"We did a lot of takes because he wanted certain qualities that he heard that sounded like Johnny Mathis," said Mathis. "Sometimes I'd go into the studio and your voice isn't quite what it should be … and you don't sound like Johnny Mathis. [Babyface] was wonderful. I would sing something and I thought, 'I can't do it any better.' And he'd say, "I know you can't but you can sing it differently.'

"The first moment that Johnny started singing, we were just like, 'That's Johnny Mathis,'" added Babyface. "It was the same beautiful voice I grew up listening to."

Davis described Mathis as being in "the top of the pantheon of all-time artists" alongside the likes of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The record executive expressed his excitement for every song on the project, while drawing parallels to his past successes such as The Bodyguard soundtrack and Santana's Supernatural.

"Every song in this album is a wonderful song reinterpreted through the work of Kenny and Johnny," said Davis. "It's a refreshing, creative traditional pop album that has respect for new material that can grow into standards."

"It was a joy to work that hard and to get the results," added Mathis. "Sometimes you work hard and you don't get the results. But this time we did."

Learn all about how the trio got those results on the podcast's latest episode. And be sure to tune in for future "Required Listening" episodes with special guests such as Sean "Diddy" Combs and Lindsey Buckingham and Christie McVie of Fleetwood Mac, among others.
