Indie Label Mexican Summer Launches Brooklyn Record Exchange Vinyl Expansion

Indie locals join forces to expand into the retail space and bring BRE to Bushwick

Brooklyn, New York's Bushwick area is getting an expanded new record store as proprietors set to soft-launch Brooklyn Record Exchange on March 28, with a full opening this Saturday, on March 30. The space is expanded from the much-loved Co-Op 87 with the help of nearby Greenpoint indie label, Mexican Summer Records, home to artists including Best Coast, Kurt Vile, Ariel Pink, Jessica Pratt, and Weyes Blood.

More than just an expanded Co-Op 87, the Brooklyn Record Exchange fulfills the hopes that started the shop as well as bringing together other local creative forces. Mike Hunchback and Ben Steidel began Co-Op 87 and Keith Abrahamsson and Andrés Santo Domingo founded Mexican Summer Records. All four men are behind the BRE launch.

The new storefront vinyl shop shares a compound with major local music landmark called Elsewhere, a reconfigured industrial space hosts multiple venues, unexpected niches, and reconditioned office space. It also attracts a great deal of young-adult foot traffic and is part of the greater Bushwick Collective effort to enrich the local scene.

"The biggest benefit is just being able to design it from the ground up," said Seidel. With rack after rack of vinyl titles to choose from, the expansion matches demand and should add to Bushwick's cultural capital as a hip locale.

On Nov. 15 and 16, the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Downtown Los Angeles will turn into an indie music lover's mecca with its first edition of The Get Together: Record Label Market & Music Fair. After throwing three successful seasons of the Come Together in their home in New York City, Other Music has paired up with L.A. concert/event power team Spaceland and the MOCA to bring their indie artist vinyl/merch fair and music showcase extravaganza to Southern California.

— MOCA (@MOCAlosangeles) October 4, 2019

Following a kick-off party the first night, on Sat. Nov. 16, the marketplace will officially launch at 11 a.m., until 5 p.m., with a chance to shop merch and vinyl from a large selection of indie labels from around the world, including Future Classic, Fat Possum, Brainfeeder, Cosmica, Domino, Matador, Mexican Summer, Ninja Tune, Rough Trade, Stones Throw, Big Crown, Sub Pop and Young Turks. The event website reveals that more labels and programming additions will be added and also notes that "you can meet and mingle with the teams behind the records you love," which is pretty awesome.

Music will, of course, be keeping the vibes alive throughout the event, with DJ sets and performances during the market, followed by a Big Crown artist showcase from 6–10 p.m. featuring the deeply soulful Lee Fields with El Michels Affair, Bobby Oroza and others. Highland Park's mouthwatering Sicilian pizza joint Triple Beam Pizza will be among the food vendors to help keep you fueled while digging for vinyl and dancing during the event.

Tickets are free for MOCA museum members or can be purchased on Eventbrite; the most up-to-date info can be found on the event's site.

MySpace Claims To Have Lost Years Of User-Uploaded Music

"We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest that you retain your backup copies," the site shared in a message
Philip Merrill

People old enough to remember the earliest days of social media will recall a time when networking platform MySpace was the top destination on the Internet, even bigger than Facebook and Google. In fact, there once was a thing called the "MySpace Generation," which helped launch the careers of artists including Lily Allen and Arctic Monkeys.

Indeed, for a time, MySpace operated as a platform for blossoming musicians to upload songs, where fans could then go and organically discover them, minus any industry middlemen. But now, in a sad erasure of digital memories, a MySpace "server migration" has resulted in a massive, irrecoverable data loss.

— Justin Timberlake (@jtimberlake) September 24, 2012

"As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from Myspace," the site informed its users with a banner message on March 18, as reported by The Guardian. "We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest that you retain your backup copies. If you would like more information, please contact our data protection officer."

Rumors and reports surrounding uploads that were no longer available have been circulating for more than a year, and Ars Technica summarized some of the support messages that assisted in letting users know whether their "content is no longer available and cannot be retrieved."

#Myspace has just done the world a massive favour by losing all my terrible old demos!

— Robin The Fog (@RobinTheFog) March 18, 2019

Despite its arguable irrelevance in today's social-media and music-discovery sphere, MySpace was at one point home to more than 14 million musicians, who uploaded more than 50 million tracks, all of which has been lost. (Unless they backed up their work, which sincerely we hope that they did.)

England's Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts revealed their initial lineup for 2019's June 26–30 event, held at Worthy Farm outside Pilton, Somerset. In addition to five-time GRAMMY winner Janet Jackson and previous nominees the Killers, 2019 Glastonbury is filled with a curated combination of the famous and emerging. Other GRAMMY winners on the lineup include the Chemical Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Diplo, Lauryn Hill, Mavis Staples, and Vampire Weekend.

In addition to the Killers, previously nominated artists performing this summer include Bastille, Neneh Cherry, the Cure, Miley Cyrus, Fatoumata Diawara, Liam Gallagher, Jon Hopkins, Hot Chip, Hozier, Janelle Monáe, Jorja Smith, Tame Impala, and Wu-Tang Clan.

One of the joys of a curated festival like Glastonbury is experiencing new acts, from the established to those just on the radar. Two accomplished artists who stand out are the band Interpol and British rapper Stefflon Don. Others include Anne-Marie, Billie Eilish, Michael Kiwanuka, Lizzo, Pale Waves, Cat Power, Latin GRAMMY winner Rosalía, Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile & The Violators, and Kamasi Washington.

Although Glastonbury 2019 has already sold out, the festival encourages those wanting to attend to register at their website for an April ticket resale.
