Haim Give A Groove-Heavy Performance Of "Gasoline" For Press Play

The GRAMMY-nominated rock outfit shows off a sizzling song from their new album 'Women In Music Pt. III'
Nate Hertweck
GRAMMYs
Aug 20, 2020 - 1:59 pm

Greatness takes time, and there are no shortcuts. Haim have been creating music together for two decades now, and it shows:

In the latest edition of GRAMMY.com's Press Play, the Los Angeles family band lay it down and light it up with this at-home performance of "Gasoline" from their newly released third album, Women In Music Pt. III. From the comfort of their home music room, the three sisters - Alana, Danielle and Este Haim - perform an infectiusly catchy, groove-heavy version of the tune L.A. Times called a "tender" song that "reflects the sisters' two decades of musical experience."

"Gasoline" was produced by Danielle, Rostam Batmanglij and Ariel Rechtshaid. Women In Music Pt. III dropped June 26 and is bursting with the band's command of the craft that cannot be contained by the confines of genre. Still, some have tried to reduce their artistic license and versatility to simply a move toward pop, a shallow judgement the band say is based on gender.

"I think other bands that aren’t all female can dabble in a bunch of different genres yet they're still called a rock band," Danielle recently told GRAMMY.com. "Meanwhile, we’re women and we dabble in all sorts of genres, [but] because we’re women it’s pop. That’s frustrating to be honest with you."

Since their 2013 debut album, Days Are Gone, Haim have been pushing musical boundaries. Their debut earned them a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist. Today, not even a pandemic can stop their groove, althought they hope to return to the stage as soon as it's safe.

"We can’t wait to start playing shows but want to be sure that we’re keeping our fans, our crew and everyone’s health and safety a priority. When it’s finally safe for everyone, we’ll definitely be playing live," Este told us recently.

Don't miss thier incredible performance.of "Gasoline" in the latest episode of Press Play above.

In the latest episode of Press Play At Home, Nashville-based singer/songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan offers a playful yet piercing take on technological dependency in his performance of "Computer of Love."

"Some advanced technology is eating through my brain," Tasjan laments at the start of the lively folk-rock song. Watch his full performance below.

Featured on his forthcoming, genre-bending album, Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan!, out Feb. 5, 2021, the song references the disconnection caused by technology and social media and the emotional barriers they create within and between people.

For the past decade, New York City band The Pretty Reckless have been putting out stadium-worthy rock anthems. Their sophomore album, 2014's Going To Hell, earned the group three No. 1 hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart, including for "Heaven Knows."

With the release of "Take Me Down," the lead single from their last album, 2016's Who You Selling For, the group earned a fourth No. 1 on the chart. They hold the record for the most No. 1s on the chart by a female-fronted act.

For the latest episode of GRAMMY.com's Press Play series (watch above), the powerhouse group perform an acoustic rendition of "House On A Hill" from Going To Hell. Frontwoman Taylor Momsen describes the heartwrenching song (inspired by the Vietnam War) as a "cry for humanity."

In the newest episode of Press Play At Home, watch Los Angeles punk band Militarie Gun perform a blazing version of their recent 'All Roads Lead to the Gun II' track, "Big Disappointment"

Nov 11, 2021 - 1:19 pm

To understand the ultra-hardworking punk musician Ian Shelton, compare his two bands: Regional Justice Center and Militarie Gun.

Regional Justice Center is more abrasive by far: a blur of grind riffs and blast beats, with Shelton — who screams and drums — working through his emotions stemming from his separation from his currently incarcerated brother.

Militarie Gun, where Shelton simply has the mic, is no less intense. But it represents a different facet of Shelton, one turned to catch a little more light.

In the newest episode of Press Play At Home, watch the band — Shelton, guitarists Nick Cogan and William Acuña, bassist Max Epstein, and drummer Vince Ngyuen — rip into "Big Disappointment," a highlight from their most recent EP, All Roads Lead to the Gun II, which dropped June 4 on Alternatives Label.

Watch Militarie Gun Rip Into "Big Disappointment"

Therein, Shelton displays his chops as a visual thinker — making music videos is his occasional day job, after all — as the band performs a high-octane rendition of "Big Disappointment."

Read More: "A Joyful Burden": How Ian Shelton Of Militarie Gun & Regional Justice Center Makes Art Out Of Negativity

While the video evokes some of Shelton's poppier influences — he counts the Beatles and Guided by Voices as two of his favorite bands — Militarie Gun's true strength is in how they engage the heart and the head simultaneously.

While their sound and energy may make you want to break things, the essence of Militarie Gun is construction, not destruction. The soul of the band is Shelton's relentless, creative drive — the invisible gun to one's head that drives self-expression and personal achievement.

Check out Militarie Gun's pummeling performance of "Big Disappointment" above and enjoy more episodes of Press Play At Home below.

True love can feel hypnotic. On the latest episode of the Press Play At Home performance series, alternative-pop band The Marías perfectly capture the mesmeric feeling of love with their warm performance of "Un Millón."

Serving as a love letter to lead singer María Zardoya's birthplace, Puerto Rico, "Un Millón" allows her to sweep the listener off their feet by pairing her commanding yet calm stage presence with her soothing delivery of the song's passionate lyrics.

Watch The Marías' Warm Performance Of "Un Millón"

As masterful as the song may sound, "Un Millón" almost didn't make it onto the Marías' recently released debut album, CINEMA, and serves as the alternative-pop band's introduction into reggaeton-inspired music.

"This is the first reggaeton-inspired track that we created," María tells GRAMMY.com. "I grew up listening to reggaeton, and we were curious to see what it would sound like if we tried making a reggaeton track."

Check out the Marías' powerful performance of "Un Millón" above and explore more episodes of Press Play At Home below.
