Exclusive GRAMMY.com Interview With Smokie Norful

GRAMMY-winning Christian music artist on why he calls his music "urban inspirational" and the Nashville music scene

Dec 2, 2014 - 4:06 pm

GRAMMY-winning Christian music artist Smokie Norful recently visited The Recording Academy's Nashville Chapter and participated in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview. Norful discussed the Nashville music scene and why he calls his music "urban inspirational," among other topics.

"I almost don't like to be pigeonholed as gospel other than the fact that what I do sing is a gospel message," said Norful. "The packaging of my music is so universal it actually could be pop, urban [or] inspirational … because it's popular in its packaging, but it's also very impacting and powerful in its content."

Born Willie Ray Norful Jr. in Muskogee, Okla., Norful was first exposed to gospel music as a young boy in his father's church, before moving to Chicago to pursue a master's degree in divinity and work as a musician and pastor. Norful's debut album, 2002's I Need You Now, topped Billboard's Gospel Albums chart, and was followed by 2004's Nothing Without You, which earned a GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. Norful's third studio album, 2006's Life Changing, garnered a GRAMMY nomination for Best Traditional Gospel Album and peaked at No. 2 on the Gospel Albums chart. In 2009 Norful released Smokie Norful: Live and received GRAMMY nominations for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance for "Jesus Is Love."

Released in April 2012, Norful's most recent album, Once In A Lifetime, features the title track as well as 14 of Norful's most significant recordings, including "Dear God," "No One Else" and "I Need You Now."

With hardy lyrics about breaking bondage, losing strength, and exiting darkness, "Face To Face" fittingly served as the intro track on Grant's latest full-length project, No Stranger. The 2020 album earned Grant a GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album at the upcoming 2022 GRAMMYs Awards show, marking her third nomination in the category and her ninth GRAMMY nomination overall.

The following is a statement from Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr.:

I'm so pleased to let you know that the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards have been rescheduled and will now be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 3 (8:00-11:30 PM, live ET/5:00-8:30 PM, live PT) on the CBS Television Network and will be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. Trevor Noah, the Emmy Award-winning host of "The Daily Show," will return as master of ceremonies for Music's Biggest Night.

Additional details about the dates and locations of other official GRAMMY Week events, including the GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony, MusiCares' Person of the Year, and the Pre-GRAMMY Gala, will be announced soon.

We are excited to take the GRAMMYs to Las Vegas for the very first time, and to put on a world-class show. From the moment we announced the postponement of the original show date, we have been inundated with heartfelt messages of support and solidarity from the artist community. We are humbled by their generosity and grateful for their unwavering commitment to the GRAMMY Awards and the Academy's mission. We appreciate the leadership CBS and our production partners at Fulwell 73 have shown during these challenging weeks and the flexibility of everyone who worked toward this solution.

In the latest episode of Positive Vibes Only, Nashville-born singer/songwriter Ellie Holcomb delivers a much-needed message of perseverance with her poignant performance of "Sweet Ever After."

"Got a lot of bad days still coming our way, but a sweet ever after," she sings sweetly on the track.

Watch Holcomb perform the powerful song in front of a full audience below.

Watch Ellie Holcomb Perform "Sweet Ever After"

"Sweet Ever After" is one of the standout tracks from Holcomb's 2021 album, Canyon. The Grand-Canyon-inspired album served as the follow-up to the Christian singer/songwriter's critically acclaimed second album, Red Sea Road, which peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart in 2017.

When describing the inspiration behind Canyon, Holcomb said, "We all know what it's like to have our hearts break and split wide open like a canyon, but there in the middle of our deepest pit of sorrow, there's a river running through." She uses the above performance to remind listeners of that river within.

Editor's Note: The 2022 GRAMMYs Awards show, officially known as the 64th GRAMMY Awards, has been rescheduled to Sunday, April 3, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The below article was updated on Tuesday, Jan. 18, to reflect the new show date and location.

The following is a Joint Statement from the Recording Academy and CBS:

“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards Show. The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31st simply contains too many risks. We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon.”
